Mercier (1922-1998) served as a tank gunner in the Army from 1942 to 1945. He was in Company C, 44th Tank Battalion and saw combat in New Guinea, Morotai Island, and the Philippines. After being discharged at the rank of staff sergeant, he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mercier worked for thirty-one years at Pope and Talbot Paper Mill in Eau Claire (Wisconsin), including fifteen years as operation controller....
